More About Recycling/Fundraising

Your donation may be tax deductible. (ask your tax specialist).

Did you know that one cell phone can pollute up to 132,000 liters of drinking water. Your unwanted Cell phones and inkjet cartridges will be recycled in accordance with EPA regulations or Refurbished and reused.

Every time we throw electronic gadgets in the trash we hurt our environment. The casings do not biodegrade and the metals (lead, gold, lithium and others) eventually find their way into our ground water. Heavy metals in our rivers and creeks kill fish, plants and other forms of life causing an imbalance in nature. We can stop this from happening and support a worth cause at the same time.

This project is perfect for students and others who need to earn Community Service hours. It is also a good project for Girl/Boy Scout Troops, service organizations, masjid/Islamic centers and other places of worship. Each item donated is like cash to us. Please do not alter the shipping label. All the information is there for it to go directly where it needs to go and we (e.g. Baitul Salaam) get the credit for the shipment, insh’Allah.

If your employer has not contracted with someone to dispose of toner packs from copiers let us know right away, insh’Allah. We will contact them to show them how they can properly dispose of the toner packs.

How To Be A Collection Point?

As Salaamu Alaikum,

We recycle in Atlanta all the time.  Let’s keep it easy.  I am going
to lay out the steps for an easy recycling drive.

Step 1

Secure permission from the leadership in your community to collect
items listed:  old cell phones (can work as well as non-working),
empty ink jet cartridges and toner packs from copy machines, iPods,
mp3 players, game consoles, digital cameras, digital video recorders
and laptops. Get a large box and get some children to decorate it.
Give them some paper, scissors, bright color paper and let the have
fun.  Someone older can go over the box to make sure everything is
pasted on it is secure.

** Please use this flyer

Step 2

Check the box once or twice a week to make sure only electronic items
are going into he box.  When it fills, or close to filling or at the
end of the month (January 31) whatever happens first email
haleem1@aol.com (me) for simple directions on how to ship.  You will
receive postage paid labels from me to use (no cost to you).  Collect
some old boxes to ship (do not buy new ones).

Now if you are going to support both Al Maun and Baitul Salaam
organizations at the end of the drive check with Al Maun and see what
items they are collecting, insh’Allah.  Donate some or all of those
items to them.  We will take the balance, insh’Allah. Baitul Salaam is
collecting more items than Al Maun.

The main thing is to not over think it.  Keep it simple.  If you need
me to send you an annoncement that can be made to your community after
Salatul Jumuah, etc., will be glad to do so, insh’ Allah. Also if
people in your community need to talk to me directly fine they can
email me at haleem1@aol.com or call me at (404) 608-8649.

Thank you for wanting to assist.

May Allah continue to bless you.

You can earn the rewards of this hadith without having to do like this man!

Special Thanks

All praises and thanks are due to Allah, Alhamduillah. Having said that, we would like to follow the teaching of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and prayer be upon him) when he said, “Whoever did not thank the people, he did not thank Allah.”

So, on behalf of HalfDate family from New Zealand to Hawaii and from Alaska to Australia, we would like to thank all of you who participated as collection points, turned your unwanted eWaste into charity, chipped in for the expenses, posted pleasant words, spread out the words, created lesson plans to teach about recycling, uploaded pictures, involved your children or students, designed posters, created videos, or made Duas.

As always, we pray that Allah reward you all with the sweetest date in Jannah.

Drive Fruits:

  • 27 entities including Masjids, schools and businesses are joining the drive.
  • Over 107 students, teachers, parents, imams, business owners, and children are either recycling, learning about it, or teaching it.
  • 15,478 people have noticed that we Muslims DO CARE about the environment (this number is an estimate based on YouTube, Facebook, comments, and email responses). This estimate does not include the free Facebook ad that was displayed over 24,000 times (thanks to br. Ahmed from Silicon Valley for free ads coupons).
    facebook-ads-for-recycling-drive
  • Temple University Radio covered the drive:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

  • A teleseminar to show how individuals and organizations can cover its utility bills by recycling.
  • A lesson plan for teachers to teach recycling, with a sample video.

How to Turn eWaste into Charity: A Guide for Organizations and Individuals

Reporting Your Numbers:

To enter the contests, please submit a list of the items collected and a list of the volunteers (so we can send you certificates), if you have any pictures of the items collected or picture of collection activities please include them too. For contest number 3, you can send us the contact and the name of your local Muslim newspaper.

Email all your submissions by Feb 1st, 2009

As for shipping your items to AlMaun and Baitul Salaam, please email them (scroll down for their contact).

Al Maun is only collecting cell phones and empty ink jet cartridges. Baitul Salaam is collecting cell phones, empty ink jet cartridges, iPods, mp3 players, empty toner packs, laptops, digital cameras, digital video recorders and game consoles. Do an inventory of your collection: total number of each item. Decide how you want to split your collection. Then contact each group to receive further instructions. Warning: When you pack your items do not use air pillows, peanuts or other fancy packing materials just use newspaper. Please do not buy shipping boxes use old ones remember we are recycling. You will receive easy to follow detail instructions from the organizations. If you need a tax letter let them know in advance of them shipping you the postage paid labels. When the labels arrive use as instructed please do not alter (unless instructed).

If groups want to continue to collect on their own contact each group separately. Baitul Salaam recycles all the time and can give you tips on how to sustain a collection drive in your community. If a masjid wants to start recycling Sr. Hadayai will be glad to act as a consultant. She only ask that your community makes a donation to the Baitul Salaam Network, Inc. at least once a year, in-sha-llah.

On behalf of the staff and helpers of Al Maun Fund, we would like to extend our appreciation in advance to HalfDate.com for being such an avenue of good.

Cell phones and used ink cartidriges (and who doesn’t have plenty of those!) are the only items we are collecting,

We suggest that if you work in an environment, such as workplace, school etc where you can place a collection box this will multiply the possible donations of the recyclables.

For our fundraiser, the shipping labels will cover up to 30 lbs, so you can wait until you have a a nice amount or send what you have, whatever works for the collector.

We look forward to hearing from everyone! Please email with your full name and mailing address to receive the prepaid labels insha’allah.

    Assalam alaikum wa rahmatullah,

in regards to the Recycling Drive, if we are collecting at our Masjid, how do you suggest we gather everything for pickup? Should we use a big empty trash bin or giant box or something like that?

Also, is there an exact list of what we should and SHOULD NOT collect for this drive? The more specific we are the easier it will be, inshaAllah. Please let me know.

What an awesome photo of the guy pulling all those recyclables. It makes me think of our Prophet’s advice: Abu Hurairah (RAA) reported that the messenger of Allah (SAW) said what translated means: “By He in Whose hand my soul is (i.e, by Allah), it is better for one of you to take a rope, cut firewood and carry it on his back (as a means of making a living) than to ask others (for charity) whether they give it to him or withhold it from him. ” Al-Bukhari

For outside the US, you can do the following:

1- send this link wide and far
2- start such programs in your country to benefit your local communities
3- you can contribute towards expenses of the drive (so far it’s covered by HalfDate, but we may open the door, if you really want to take part).

Please don’t ship items from overseas :) You may run into custom issues and end up cost you more than the items themselves :) )

This is a great idea Mansha’Allah! Looks like the Islamic University in MN is already involved, that’s where I go to for my Islamic education. Insha’Allah I will help out in anyway I can.

May Allah reward all of you for your hard work…Amin!

    Assalamu’alaikum…
May Allah bless this website, so many creative ideas to get rewards from Allah.
Speaking about keeping our environment clean…all this time I’ve been thinking to bring and use paper bag myself for shopping stuff instead of plastic that’s very commonly used here in my country, Indonesia

Brothers and sisters…do you have any idea how I can support this drive? [by non-funding way, coz...i'm still unemployee :( ]

I’m from outside UK or USA, so if I want to do the recycle program like what HalfDate offer, what and how do I have to do?

    Jazakumullah khairan katsira

    As Salaamu Alaikum,

Please continue to ask everyone you know. Especially those of you who work outside of your homes in corporate America. You will be surprised how many people change cell phones like shoes and how so many offices/companies are not recycling their empty toner packs (copier ink, fax machine) ink packs, etc.

There are lots of the items we ask for just collecting dust or worse they are landfills causing all types of problems.

    Please talk about this effort.

FYI-Baitul Salaam recycles all the time. Just contact us after this drive at haleem1@aol.com if you want to continue collecting on any basis (once or twice per year), etc.

May Allah continue to bless all of us for thinking about the environment and helping others.

May Allah bless and reward you for all your efforts. Please note that I’m keen to sponsor any sister or brother paying $25 on monthly basis but not through paypal as it is not used in my country Egypt. I can pay from my online MasterCard, can I do it. Advice me, may Allah (SW) bless we all in the other day.

    As Salaamu Alaikum,

Please try to attend the teleseminar today. See information at the top of this page. We are recycling items that would normally go into the trash. These items eventually find their way into our streams and pollute the water. We are collecting these items turning them into companies that have proven to be responsible in refurbishing usable parts and properly disposing of those items that can’t be resused.

    As Salaamu Alaikum,

Starting January 31 you can call me at (404) 608-8649 for shipping instructions. It is easy to ship the items you have collected. Get boxes (used not new), newspaper (no styrofoam or air pillows). You can email me at haleem1@aol.com.

Some of you are supporting Al Maun only so contact them for directions on how to ship. The groups that are supporting both I suggest you split your collection of cell phones and empty ink jet cartridges in half and then send all the other items to us (digital cameras, digital video recorders, iPods, mp3 players, empty toner packs). Put the empty toner packs in a separate box (these are ink containers that are larger than your hand that go into copiers and fax machines).

Send your mailing address to us at Baitul Salaam Network, Inc. and total number of boxes so we can get the free shipping labels to you.

Talk to you later this week, insh’Allah.

May Allah continue to bless you.

    Assalam Aleikum:
May Allah reward you us all with that which is best in his sight inshallah….for all our good deeds.

    ALL MINOR ACTS ARE VALUABLE!!!!
On the authority of Abu Hurairah, who said: The messenger of Allah said
“Each person’s every joint must perform a charity every day the sun comes up : to act justly between two people is a charity; to help a man with his mount, lifting him onto it or hoistingd up his belongings onto it is a charity: a good word is a charity, every step you take to prayers is a charity and removing a harmful thing from the road is a charity.”

It was related by Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim (Hadith 25 in An-Nawawi’s Forty Hadith)

  • Experience of a collection point in PA

[Admin: HalfDate received this nice report of lesson learned. We removed the masjid name]

I notice how technology changes and is replaced, all the while the older technology is still able to be used but gets thrown away improperly. I started with [----] Mosque, announcing at Jummah and weekly halaqas as well as during the weekend school about how I am doing a recycling drive. The mosque board was hesitant to have me do this as previous volunteers never picked up their items from the drive and the mosque became a ‘dumping ground’ but I was able to change that in the end. Also to ease their minds at first that I wasn’t going to sell this stuff and make money on my own I urged people to give stuff that wasn’t even working since it was a recycling drive. The younger kids had fun learning that they were doing something “for Allah” in other ways than just reading the Quran and offering Salah, and that inside the mosque they were learning about something they could actually relate to. Everyone else liked the idea that it was helping the environment and going to a real cause- a woman’s shelter and a financial fund.

Next I got Temple University’s MSA involved. I set up a box outside the MSA office for collections. I even had it listed on http://www.temple.edu/msa and the MSA’s Facebook page, and had it sent out during in the weekly emails. This was the first time I ran an ongoing event on my own and thought it was pretty successful. I advertised this event in the school’s newspaper for two weeks as well where I got the school’s radio and communication team interested in interviewing me about what I was doing and I got Cindy to speak as well. While it was early in the year and people had already replaced their ink cartridges and gotten their new gadgets in order before returning to school, I was still able to raise some phones and cartridges and raise awareness about how Islam supports an environmental inititave as well as how there are Muslim based women shelters even in America.

I donate my ink cartridges all the time and it felt good to be able to donate it to an Islamic organization for once, which I feel don’t get much response very often. The people at my mosque were glad that I started this and acted as a model to the younger children who can see how what they do even outside of reading Quran and doing Salah can help others in need, both Muslim and non-Muslim. Looking back there are things I could have done to make this drive run “better” such as setting a box in the main student center instead of by the MSA office, but as a start and with strict deadlines I feel like it was very successful.

I have photos that I can send tomorrow.
