“Hey, lets do the card thing… it would be awesome for our kids to make cards for refugees” -Teacher N

There are about 50 families, lots of kids, about 10 widows, and a few sisters living on their own. If your school/masjid want to ask your kids to make cards for these families, please try to make 50 cards and let the kids write their names and their city.

Sample Letters & Cards

“We are from a class in an Islamic After School program in California, ages 4-7, and we heard about a refugee family whose daughter can no longer walk and talk. The kids wanted to make cards and drawings for their sister in Islam. May Allah reward you all for your efforts inshaa-Allah.”

All the info they gave was that it was from Sister Yafa and her class (Imam, Yusuf, Ahmed, Muhammad, Iman, Amal, Yasmine, and Hosna). May Allah reward the teacher, students, parents, school admin, and all those who helped with the sweetest date in Jannah :D

If you want to write to a specific person, you can write to the following:

Kids:
you can ask them to write to Hassan and Ibrahim, asking them to take good care of their mother, of each other, and their younger brother.

Or Mustafa:

Adult:
Abu Mais
A father of 7 kids, eldest is 14 yrs old. He takes his kids to and from school everyday, runs all the errands during the day and then works at night as a security guard.

Pharwin
A Burmese girl, mashallah very very smart, she serves as our guide every time we go to the Burmese complex because she is the only one that can speak English there. She is still in school, learning fast and likes school.

Some of you asked about giving these families some gifts. Here are some suggestions:

Prayer rugs, Qurans (especially, in Burmese language) and scarfs/Abayas, school supplies, household items and appliance, and clothes.

The following are some example of these families (Al-Amaanah sponsors about 50 families):

Family #1 (Iraqi)
Single woman, lives on her own, doesn’t speak English. Wallahy she has been waiting all week for our visit, she hasn’t been here for long and doesn’t know that many ppl. Has no one to talk to, and thats her main problem, she wants to learn English so bad. I suggest some sisters make it a habit to visit her twice a week. Maybe get some dessert or something and just go spend some quality time with her. She will be having surgery in April so won’t be able to work this month until she gets the surgery and recovers. She also needs pocket money during this period until she starts working again. Please visit her, call her on the phone, make her know that she is not forgotten!

Family #2 (Iraqi)
Single woman living with her mom and she is the one that has to pay the bills, her mom is too old to work. She was in dire need of finding a job last week and alhamdulillah she just got one a couple of days ago. She hasn’t been working for a month though and her rent has to be paid before the end of the month!!! She also is planning to move closer to work because she takes 3 buses just to get there from where they live. So we promised to help her move, but rent still has to be paid for this month!!!

Family #3 (Iraqi)
A man in his mid 30s, can’t work because he has a lot of medical problems, needs help paying his electric bill (inshalla is in the process of being taken care of). He doesn’t speak English and therefore is isolated in this big world! We should start making it a habit to visit him every week too. He says he could use some furniture around the house so we need to go visit him and find out how can we help him more.

Family #4 (Iraqi) *update 4/19 He found a job, Alhamduilllah*
The father used to work as a barber in Iraq, he had another job here but got laid off because of the economy. He said he is waiting on his papers to come from Iraq this week so that he can start working his normal job (cutting hair). He is having trouble paying the bills and rent till he starts working again.

More About Recycling/Fundraising

Your donation may be tax deductible. (ask your tax specialist).

Did you know that one cell phone can pollute up to 132,000 liters of drinking water. Your unwanted Cell phones and inkjet cartridges will be recycled in accordance with EPA regulations or Refurbished and reused.

Every time we throw electronic gadgets in the trash we hurt our environment. The casings do not biodegrade and the metals (lead, gold, lithium and others) eventually find their way into our ground water. Heavy metals in our rivers and creeks kill fish, plants and other forms of life causing an imbalance in nature. We can stop this from happening and support a worth cause at the same time.

This project is perfect for students and others who need to earn Community Service hours. It is also a good project for Girl/Boy Scout Troops, service organizations, masjid/Islamic centers and other places of worship. Each item donated is like cash to us. Please do not alter the shipping label. All the information is there for it to go directly where it needs to go and we (e.g. Baitul Salaam) get the credit for the shipment, insh’Allah.

If your employer has not contracted with someone to dispose of toner packs from copiers let us know right away, insh’Allah. We will contact them to show them how they can properly dispose of the toner packs.

How To Be A Collection Point?

As Salaamu Alaikum,

We recycle in Atlanta all the time.  Let’s keep it easy.  I am going
to lay out the steps for an easy recycling drive.

Step 1

Secure permission from the leadership in your community to collect
items listed:  old cell phones (can work as well as non-working),
empty ink jet cartridges and toner packs from copy machines, iPods,
mp3 players, game consoles, digital cameras, digital video recorders
and laptops. Get a large box and get some children to decorate it.
Give them some paper, scissors, bright color paper and let the have
fun.  Someone older can go over the box to make sure everything is
pasted on it is secure.

** Please use this flyer

Step 2

Check the box once or twice a week to make sure only electronic items
are going into he box.  When it fills, or close to filling or at the
end of the month (January 31) whatever happens first email
haleem1@aol.com (me) for simple directions on how to ship.  You will
receive postage paid labels from me to use (no cost to you).  Collect
some old boxes to ship (do not buy new ones).

Now if you are going to support both Al Maun and Baitul Salaam
organizations at the end of the drive check with Al Maun and see what
items they are collecting, insh’Allah.  Donate some or all of those
items to them.  We will take the balance, insh’Allah. Baitul Salaam is
collecting more items than Al Maun.

The main thing is to not over think it.  Keep it simple.  If you need
me to send you an annoncement that can be made to your community after
Salatul Jumuah, etc., will be glad to do so, insh’ Allah. Also if
people in your community need to talk to me directly fine they can
email me at haleem1@aol.com or call me at (404) 608-8649.

Thank you for wanting to assist.

May Allah continue to bless you.

ma salaam

Special Thanks

All praises and thanks are due to Allah, Alhamduillah. Having said that, we would like to follow the teaching of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and prayer be upon him) when he said, “Whoever did not thank the people, he did not thank Allah.”

So, on behalf of HalfDate family from New Zealand to Hawaii and from Alaska to Australia, we would like to thank all of you who participated as collection points, turned your unwanted eWaste into charity, chipped in for the expenses, posted pleasant words, spread out the words, created lesson plans to teach about recycling, uploaded pictures, involved your children or students, designed posters, created videos, or made Duas.

As always, we pray that Allah reward you all with the sweetest date in Jannah.

Al Maun is only collecting cell phones and empty ink jet cartridges. Baitul Salaam is collecting cell phones, empty ink jet cartridges, iPods, mp3 players, empty toner packs, laptops, digital cameras, digital video recorders and game consoles. Do an inventory of your collection: total number of each item. Decide how you want to split your collection. Then contact each group to receive further instructions. Warning: When you pack your items do not use air pillows, peanuts or other fancy packing materials just use newspaper. Please do not buy shipping boxes use old ones remember we are recycling. You will receive easy to follow detail instructions from the organizations. If you need a tax letter let them know in advance of them shipping you the postage paid labels. When the labels arrive use as instructed please do not alter (unless instructed).

If groups want to continue to collect on their own contact each group separately. Baitul Salaam recycles all the time and can give you tips on how to sustain a collection drive in your community. If a masjid wants to start recycling Sr. Hadayai will be glad to act as a consultant. She only ask that your community makes a donation to the Baitul Salaam Network, Inc. at least once a year, in-sha-llah.

Right now, I am only listing 1 bookmark under each design (total of 10 on sale), but as orders come in, I will add more quantity (until 29 is reached). As you can see, I put the price as $0.25 each. Eid Gifts for Duaa, Tawka, Afaf & Leena

Duaa, six, and her family suffered serious burns due to a gas explosion a year ago. Many non-Muslims have been gratefully helping them, yet many Muslims in NY don’t know about their case.

Their mom was completely unrecognizable at the hospital. Before she died, she removed all of her gold (jewelry) and asked for it to be given to charity, because she knew her death was coming, subhanAllah. At the day when sister Lazeena visited them for Eid, the children, one by one sat on their father’s lap and repeated after him, making du’a for Allah to place their mother in Jannah and to reunite them all together there with her, Ameen.

Watch this video and help them.

“Yes! I just showed my kids the video, and they are writing letters to Duaa and her sisters during homeschool today. We made it a lesson on caring about others. Jazak Allah khair for passing this along to us.” -Sr. Amina

Then Leena came home. SubhanAllah it was much more emotional seeing her because of her being blind. She walked into the living room, her arms stretched out feeling around. Her father told her she had guests and she was beaming. She felt around the livingroom hugging us, kissing us and giggling. No doubt she was the one who laughed and smiled the most out of all of them mashaAllah. However, it’s obvious she still needs time to get comfortable with her condition. Eating is very difficult for her to do on her own, she also seems to get really irritated and emotional whenever she’s playing with her sisters and they take something from her or even get up and leave without telling her. She starts wailing right away and throwing a tantrum. I can only imagine how she must feel. Remember she wasn’t born blind, she remembers the world of sight I’m sure, subhanAllah, and so now being trapped in a world of darkness will take her a lot of time to get used to, but overall she’s very happy mashaAllah.

Update: Read about the Eid visit to Al-Ghaithi family at http://alghaithigirls.com

Requests:

A sister has been collecting for them, so we just want to add an Eid gift package for the children $400.

And if you have kids, please ask them to send cards or letters to this family. Of course, make dua!

If you have any questions or comments, you can email lazeena.hosain[AT]yahoo[DOT]com (this is the same email for Paypal, please specify HalfDate Eid Gift, otherwise it goes for general donation)

We’d like you to also thank the firefighters and the hospital that took care of them, as the Prophet (SAW) said, “Whoever did not thank people, did not thank Allah.”
